Germany and Bayern Munich legend Gerd Muller has died at the age of 75.
Muller has a very long story in the world of football. The former player who plays as a striker started his professional career with TSV 1861 Nordingen in 1962.
He is known as the spearhead who is able to produce a total of 47 goals from just 28 appearances! Because of his ability, Bayern Munich immediately recruited him to join Franz Beckenbauer and Sepp Maier.
Muller held the status of Bayern Munich's goal machine for 15 seasons, from 1964 to 1979. He played 607 games in all competitions and also scored 566 goals for Die Bavarians.
Once his career as a player ended in 1981 with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, Muller decided to hang up his boots. He did not continue his career as a coach because he was busy with alcohol rehabilitation activities.
In 2015, Muller was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. For six years he underwent treatment at home, until finally losing the fight against the disease on Sunday (15/8/2021) morning local time.
Bayern Munich convey this sad news through its official website. "The club and all its fans mourn the death of Gerd Muller, who passed away on Sunday morning at the age of 75."
"Muller made history with Bayern and the German national team. He scored an incredible 566 goals in 607 official appearances for Bayern and still holds the record for top goalscorer in the Bundesliga with 365, also being the top scorer seven times. He scored 68 goals in 62 appearances
Several important figures at Bayern Munich expressed their condolences about Muller's death. Like Herbert Hainer as club president and CEO and former goalkeeper, Oliver Kahn.
"FC Bayern would not be the club we all love as it is today without Gerd Muller. His name and memories will live on forever," said Heiner.
"As a player and as a person, Gerd Muller is part of FC Bayern and his development into one of the biggest clubs in the world is second to none. Gerd will forever be in our hearts," said Kahn.
Muller's career ended with a series of proud achievements. He won 14 titles from various competitions, including the European Cup (now the Champions League) for Bayern Munich and contributed the World Cup trophy for the German national team in 1972.
